Devonshire Park is Eastbourne’s oldest park dating from 1874 when the 7th Duke of
Devonshire set up the Devonshire Park Company. The Tennis Courts were set up
in 1879 to the design used at Wimbledon 2 years earlier when the LTA standardised
the rules of Lawn tennis.
A guide dated 1893 describes a music garden with facilities for cricket, tennis, racquets
and roller skating. A ladies “cycle academy” is also mentioned. The first major tennis
championships were held here in 1881.
The venue is world famous for several major tennis tournaments every year.
